The Tierärztekammer of a Land (also Landestierärztekammer) is the legal professional representation of all veterinarians living and working in this federal state. Every practising veterinarian is a compulsory member of the regional chamber responsible for his field of activity. The legal basis is the state-specific Chamber Act for the Health Professions (Heilberufsgesetz, Heilberufe-Kammergesetz, etc.).
The veterinary chambers are also the point of contact for veterinary assistants and animal owners.

The Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons is a corporation under public law and is subject to state supervision. The executive body is the chamber assembly of all veterinarians, which elects the board and various committees from among its members. The tasks of the veterinary chambers are in particular:

• to safeguard the common professional interests of all members of the Chamber in accordance with the interests of the general public,
• to supervise the fulfilment of the professional duties of the members of the Chamber,
• to promote quality assurance in the veterinary field as well as the professional training of the members of the Chamber, to regulate their further training and to certify additional qualifications,
• to work towards a good professional relationship between the members of the Chamber, to mediate disputes between members of the Chamber as well as between them and third parties arising from the exercise of the profession and to set up conciliation bodies for the examination of medical malpractice,
• to create welfare institutions for members of the Chamber and members of their families,
• to prepare opinions and expert opinions for authorities and courts on all matters relating to the profession and field of expertise of the members of the Chamber and to appoint experts to prepare expert opinions,
• work towards adequate veterinary care for the population,
• assist the public veterinary service in the performance of its tasks.
