Request information from the Central Register for Foreigners

Description

The Central Register of Foreigners stores personal data of foreigners who live or have lived in Germany for more than 90 days. It contains data such as:

Particulars
the Foreigners' Registration Office and
Details of the residence permit.

Data is also collected for events relevant to residence law, for example when applying for asylum.

If you would like to receive information about your data stored in the Central Register of Foreigners, you must submit an application to the BVA. In order to avoid access to your personal data to unauthorised persons, your request can only be answered once your identity has been verified beyond doubt.

Note: You can also request the information through an authorized representative.

Which documents are required?

Valid proof of identity:
- in Germany by:
  - certification of the signature on the request for information, or
  - Presentation of an official ID card when appearing in person at the Federal Office of Administration
- abroad by:
  - certification of the signature on the request for information by the diplomatic mission or consular post or an authority of the country of origin, or
  - a separate letter from a notary for signature certification with German translation by a sworn interpreter

Note: Please attach a translation of the signature certification if it has not been made in German. If you would like to request information from an authorised representative, the signature on the power of attorney must be certified (exception: the authorised representative is a lawyer admitted to practice in a German court).

Process flow

You can request information from the Central Register of Foreigners in writing or in person.

Written application:

Download the application form from the BVA website. Fill it out completely.
Send the application form together with the required documents to the BVA.
After checking your documents, you will receive the desired information from the Central Register of Foreigners by post.

Personal application:

Make an appointment with the BVA. Bring the necessary documentation.
Submit your personal application to the BVA for information from the Central Register of Foreigners.
After checking your documents, you will receive the desired information by post.
