Issuing a death certificate in case of death abroad

You can apply for the issuance of a German death certificate for a death occurring abroad at the responsible German registry office.

the prior subsequent certification of the death occurring abroad in a German death register.
an application for a death certificate may be submitted by:
- Spouses and partners of the deceased person
- Ancestors and descendants of the deceased person (e.B. child, grandchild)
- siblings of the deceased person, if you demonstrate a legitimate interest, or
- other persons, if they credibly demonstrate a legal interest
Applicants must be over 16 years of age.

As an applicant, you must prove your identity (identity card, passport or copy of the identity document)
where appropriate, the production of further documents is required.

for each additional copy if requested at the same time as the first copy

The deadline for the registry office to keep the death register of 30 years must not have expired.

Jurisdiction lies with the municipality and city in which the person who died abroad had his last residence.

You submit the application for the issuance of the death certificate to the competent registry office and attach the necessary documents.
The registry office will check your details and the documents you have submitted and, if necessary, issue the death certificate.
The registry office will send you the death certificate by post, unless personal collection has been arranged.
The fees will be paid either in advance or after shipment / upon collection by you.
