Applying for the renewal of a category D, DE, D1 or D1E driving license

Description

The driving license for categories D, DE, D1 or D1E is valid for a maximum of 5 years. If you have such a license and it is about to expire, you can have it extended. You submit the application to the driving license authority in your place of residence. The extension is also valid for a maximum of 5 years.

Prerequisites

You have a driving license with a category D, D1, DE or D1E license.
You are suitable to drive a bus.

Required documents

identity card or passport
current driver's license
biometric photo
Proof of eyesight (not older than 2 years)
Proof of physical and mental aptitude (not older than 1 year)
if you are 50 years or older: performance psychology report (not older than 1 year)

Fees (costs)

The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).

If the driver's license is sent directly to your home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.

Deadlines

You can submit the application at the earliest 6 months before the expiry date of the previous driving license.

If you submit the application after the expiry date of your previous license, you will not be granted an extension but a new license. The fact that you previously held a corresponding driving license will then no longer be evident from the new license.
