Winter tyres mandatory

As a driver and/or vehicle owner, you must make sure that your car is equipped for the weather. In the case of

  • Black ice
  • slippery snow,
  • Slush
  • icy ice or
  • Frost smoothness

only drive if you have winter tyres on all wheels.

You may only use tyres whose tread and driving characteristics are also suitable for snow, i.e.:

  • have the Alpine symbol (pictogram mountain with snowflake) or
  • Mud and snow tyres ("M+S") manufactured before 2018 (Attention: These are only valid as winter tyres until 30.09.2024)

If your car does not have the necessary tyres, you as a driver – in the event of a police check – must expect a fine of 60 euros and one point in Flensburg. If this violation of the StVO results in an obstruction, the fine increases to 80 euros. In case of danger, it is even 100 euros. The maximum fine is 120 euros in the event of an accident. In any case, the sanction is also a point in Flensburg.

If you drive one of the following vehicles and there are no winter tyres for it, then you are exempt from the regulation, but then have to fulfil further obligations for road safety:

  • single-track motor vehicles (such as motorcycles or scooters),
  • agricultural and forestry commercial vehicles,
  • forklift vehicles,
  • motorised ambulances,
  • Emergency vehicles from organisations such as the fire brigade and
  • Special vehicles for which winter tyres (tyre classes C1, C2 or C3) with the Alpine symbol are not available due to their design.

These vehicles may be driven without winter tyres in winter weather conditions. However, before the start of each journey, it must be checked whether it is necessary to carry out the journey because the destination cannot be reached by other means of transport, and during the journey a minimum distance (half the mileage in metres) to vehicles in front must be maintained and it must not be driven faster than 50 km/h.

Special regulations apply if you transport dangerous goods with vehicles subject to labelling.
