Registration in the Register of Craftsmen with a university degree from the EU, the EEA State or Switzerland

Description

The entry in the register of craftsmen is necessary if you want to operate a craft in Germany that requires approval.
Registration in the Register of Craftsmen is possible for:

natural or legal persons, and
partnerships with legal capacity.

This also applies if:

You wish to independently exercise a substantial part of a craft subject to licensing.
You want to practice several crafts subject to approval independently. In this case, you need to be entered in the register of craftsmen for each craft subject to approval.

As a rule, entry in the register of craftsmen requires a passed master craftsman's examination or at least an equivalent professional qualification, which can be obtained in Germany or abroad. Therefore, an entry in the register of craftsmen is also possible on the basis of a university degree successfully completed in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland (e.g. engineering studies) with a standard period of study of at least three years full-time, provided that the focus of study corresponds to that of the craft to be practiced. If vocational training is required in addition to studying in the country of origin, proof must be provided that this has been completed. Proof of qualification must be provided by the owner of the business or an employed plant manager who is responsible for the technical management.

Prerequisites

You can be entered in the Register of Craftsmen in order to practise a craft subject to authorisation if you have completed a university degree in a Member State of the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland that meets the following requirements:

Completion of at least 3 years' full-time or part-time education of equivalent duration at a university, college or other establishment of education and training of an equivalent level.
The focus of study must correspond to that of the craft to be practiced.
If vocational training is required in addition to the studies, proof must also be provided that this has been completed.

Required documents

Sole proprietorship:

Copy of identity card or comparable identification document
Copy of the university's degree certificate
Copy of the business registration (can be submitted later after entry in the register of craftsmen)

Companies under civil law (GbR):

Copies of identity cards or comparable identification documents of the shareholders or authorised representatives
Copy of the articles of association (unless informally concluded)
Copy of university diplomas
Copy of the business registration (can be submitted later after entry in the register of craftsmen)

Commercial partnerships with legal capacity of the general partnership (OHG), limited partnership (KG) and corresponding foreign company forms:

Copies of identity cards or comparable identification documents of the shareholders or authorised representatives
for proof of entrepreneurial legal form
- if the company is based in Germany:
  - for companies entered in the commercial register: extract from the register, for the OHG additionally a copy of the articles of association
  - if no registration has been made: copy of the articles of association
- for foreign legal forms:
  - Extract from the register of the competent foreign register for companies entered in registers, otherwise
  - Copy of the articles of association
- Copy of university diplomas
- Copy of the business registration (can be submitted later after entry in the register of craftsmen)

Legal entities – Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung (GmbH), haftungsbeschränkte Unternehmergesellschaft (UG), Aktiengesellschaft (AG), eingetragene Genossenschaft (eG):

Copies of identity cards or comparable identification documents of authorised representatives
for proof of entrepreneurial legal form:
- if the company is domiciled in Germany: extract from the commercial or cooperative register
- for foreign legal forms: extract from the register of the competent foreign register
Copy of the business registration (can be submitted later after entry in the register of craftsmen)
Management details

When employing a manager, the following documents must also be submitted:
