Apply for a European firearms pass
Description
The European firearms pass is valid for 5 years and can be extended twice for 5 years at a time.
Only weapons for which you have a valid permit for the purchase and possession of weapons (gun ownership card or hunting license) are entered in your European Firearms Pass. Up to 10 weapons are entered in the European Firearms Pass. If you wish to take more weapons with you, you will receive another European Firearms Pass.
You may take the corresponding ammunition with you for the registered weapons, but only as much as you are likely to need. Experience has shown that you will need less ammunition as a hunter than as a marksman.
The European firearms pass is no guarantee that you are actually allowed to take the registered weapons into the country. You should therefore check before traveling whether you are allowed to take the weapons with you to the country in question. In addition to the European firearms pass, you must also carry an identification document and the firearms ownership card in which the firearms are registered. It is also advisable to carry an invitation from the hunting club or the hunting license for the country or confirmation of registration for a shooting competition.
The European firearms pass is not an import document and does not entitle you to take firearms or ammunition abroad permanently. You will need other permits for this.
The European Firearms Pass (EFP) allows holders of firearms possession cards to temporarily take weapons and ammunition with them when visiting another EU member state or Schengen state.
You must have a valid permit for the purchase and possession of the weapons (e.g. hunting license or gun ownership card) that are to be entered in the European firearms pass.
You must be the holder of a gun ownership card. If the last background check was no more than six months ago, the EFP can usually be issued immediately. Otherwise, your reliability under firearms law must be checked. This can take approx. 6-8 weeks.
- Identity card or passport (copy)
- Weapons possession card (WBK) or hunting license
- Current photograph (not older than 1 year, at least 45 x 35 millimeters in size, with a light background)
A fee of € 57.00 is charged for the issue of the EFP. A fee of € 29.00 is charged for the extension of an EFP that has already been issued. The (separate) entry or removal of a firearm in or from the EFP is subject to a fee of €29.00.
When applying, you should note that the processing time usually takes 6-8 weeks. You should bear this in mind so that the EFP can be issued or extended in good time for your next trip.
Please contact the weapons authority in your district. If you live in Dessau-Roßlau, please also contact the weapons authority.
If you live in Halle or Magdeburg, please contact the respective police department.

You must apply for the European firearms pass at the competent firearms authority. Submit the application together with the required documents.
The firearms authority will issue you with the European firearms pass if you meet the necessary requirements.
The application for a European firearms pass or its renewal can be found below.
This must be completed, signed and submitted. This can be done in person (during office hours), by post, by fax or by e-mail.
The firearms authority will then check whether all requirements have been met so that the European firearms pass can be issued or extended.
This check usually takes approx. 6 - 8 weeks to process, as information must be obtained from the Federal Central Register, the Public Prosecutor's Register of Proceedings, the local police station and the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
If all requirements are met, you will be informed by us without being asked that the European firearms pass has been issued and is ready for collection or can be extended.
You can use the NWR identification numbers (NWR ID) to complete the application more quickly:
- Your personal NWR ID (P or F NWR ID) for your personal details
- the permit NWR ID for the firearms permit (E-NWR ID)
- the weapon or weapon part NWR ID (W or T NWR ID).
You can obtain the NWR IDs on request from the relevant weapons authority.
