Apply for recognition as a Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics or Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics with professional qualification from EU/EEA/Switzerland

Description

The profession of medical technologist for functional diagnostics or medical technologist for functional diagnostics is regulated in Germany. This means that in order for you to be able to work in Germany as a medical technologist for functional diagnostics, you need a state permit. With the permit, you may use the professional title "Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics" or "Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics" and work in the profession.

Even with a professional qualification from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, you can obtain state permission from the competent authority in Germany. In order to obtain the permit, you must have your foreign professional qualification recognized.

In the recognition procedure, the competent authority compares your professional qualification from abroad with the German professional qualification and checks its equivalence. The equivalence of the professional qualification is an important prerequisite for the issuance of the state permit.

In addition to the equivalence of the professional qualification, you must meet other requirements for the granting of the permit. Other requirements are, for example, sufficient German language skills and health suitability.
If your professional qualification does not come from the EU, EEA or Switzerland, other regulations apply.
You can also apply for the procedure from abroad.

Prerequisites

You have a professional qualification as a medical technologist for functional diagnostics or medical technologist for functional diagnostics from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland.
You want to work in Germany as a medical technologist for functional diagnostics or a medical technologist for functional diagnostics.
Personal suitability: You are reliable for working as a medical technologist for functional diagnostics or medical technologist for functional diagnostics and have no criminal record.
Health suitability: You can work mentally and physically as a medical technologist for functional diagnostics or medical technologist for functional diagnostics.
You have German language skills at the required language level. This is usually the language level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Perhaps: You come from a third country and do not yet live or work in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland? Then you have to prove that you want to work in the profession in Germany. Proof includes, for example, an application for an entry visa for gainful employment, applications for a job, invitations to job interviews, a business concept or a location note from the Central Service Agency for Professional Recognition (ZSBA).

You usually hand in these documents later. The competent authority will inform you when you should hand in the documents:

Proof of your personal suitability: for example, an extract from your criminal record or certificate of good conduct from your country of origin. The proof must be no more than 3 months old at the time of application.
Proof of your health suitability: for example, a medical certificate. The proof must be no more than 3 months old at the time of application.
Proof of your German language skills

The competent authority will tell you which documents you need to submit as a simple copy, as a certified copy or in the original.

Fees (costs)

The costs generally depend on the effort required for processing.

In addition, additional costs may arise (e.g. for translations, certifications or compensatory measures). These costs vary from person to person.

Deadlines

Sometimes documents are still missing in the procedure. The competent authority will then inform you by when you have to submit the documents.

Legal remedy

You can take legal action against the decision of the competent authority within a certain period of time (e.g. file an objection). The decision will then be reviewed. Details can be found in the information on legal remedies at the end of your decision. We recommend that you first talk to the competent authority before taking legal action against the decision.

Procedure

Application

You submit an application for permission to use the professional title "Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics" or "Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics" to the competent authority. You can submit the application with the documents to the competent authority or send it by post. Do not send originals. Sometimes you can also send the application electronically.

Examination of equivalence

The competent authority will then check whether you meet all the requirements. An important prerequisite is the equivalence of your professional qualification. The competent authority compares your professional qualification from abroad with the German professional qualification as a medical technologist for functional diagnostics. The professional qualification is equivalent if there are no significant differences between your foreign professional qualification and the German professional qualification.

Possible results of the test

If your professional qualification is equivalent, your foreign professional qualification will be recognised. The competent authority can confirm the result to you in writing. You still have to meet the other requirements. Then you will receive permission to use the professional title "Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics" or "Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics".

Are there any significant differences between your professional qualification and the German professional qualification? Perhaps you can compensate for the differences through your professional practice, other knowledge or skills (lifelong learning). You must prove that you have professional experience. Knowledge and skills must be certified by an authority of the state in which you acquired the knowledge or skills.

However, it may be that the essential differences cannot be compensated for by this knowledge. In this case, the competent authority will tell you the main differences between your professional qualification and the German professional qualification. It also tells you why you can't make up for these key differences.

The competent authority will also provide you with compensatory measures that you can take to compensate for the significant differences.

If you decide not to take compensatory measures, your professional qualification will not be recognised. In this case, they are not allowed to work in Germany as a medical technologist for functional diagnostics or as a medical technologist for functional diagnostics.

Compensatory measures

There are various compensatory measures:

Adaptation period: The adaptation period lasts a maximum of three years.
Aptitude test: In the aptitude test, only those areas in which significant differences have been identified are examined. The aptitude test is a practical exam with exam interviews.

As a rule, you can choose between an adaptation period or an aptitude test.

If you successfully complete the compensatory measure and meet all other requirements, you will receive permission to use the professional title "Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics" or "Medical Technologist for Functional Diagnostics".

Further information

Partial access to the profession for professional qualifications from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland

Your professional qualification is not equivalent and the differences are too great? Then you may be able to work in the profession with a partial access to the profession. With partial access to the profession, you can also work in the profession without recognition. There are certain prerequisites for this. Your professional qualification must include at least one so-called reserved activity of the German professional qualification. Reserved activities may only be carried out by specially trained persons.
You must also prove that you are personally suitable, fit in health and have the necessary knowledge of German.

With partial access to the profession, you may only take on certain tasks as a medical technologist for functional diagnostics or medical technologist for functional diagnostics. You can apply for partial access to the profession at the competent authority.

Freedom to provide services

Would you like to offer services only sometimes and for a short time in Germany? Then most of the time you don't need the state permit. You must meet these requirements:

You must be established in another state of the EU, the EEA or Switzerland.
You will need to prove your professional qualification.
You must provide proof of German language proficiency at the required language level.
You will need to prove your personal suitability.
You must notify the competent authority of your activity in writing.

The competent authority will inform you whether you are allowed to provide services or whether you have to take an aptitude test.

Notice of equivalence

In the approval procedure, the equivalence is also checked (recognition procedure). You can apply for a separate notification for the result of the examination.

Procedure for ethnic German repatriates

As a late repatriate, you can go through the recognition procedure either according to the laws mentioned here or according to the Federal Expellees Act. You can decide for yourself. The competent authority will advise you on which procedure is right for you.
