Applying for a replacement for a lost registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document)

Description

You may only use a vehicle subject to registration on public roads if it has been approved for this purpose by the responsible registration authority.

The registration certificate part II serves as proof that you can dispose of the vehicle and is important, for example

when selling
when re-registering
when financing

You must apply for a replacement document for the registration certificate part II in the event of

loss
theft
illegibility

If the registration certificate Part II has been stolen, you must report this to the police. If you lose the registration certificate Part II or it has been destroyed, you must make an affirmation in lieu of an oath that your statements are correct.

It is not possible to apply for a replacement document online. You must go to your local registration office in person. You will receive the new registration certificate part II after a period of time, which will be communicated to you.

You may continue to drive your vehicle despite losing the registration certificate part II.

Required documents

valid identity card or passport
for commercially used vehicles: appropriate proof
in the event of loss: declaration of loss to the registration authority, in individual cases with an affidavit
in the event of theft: confirmation from the police that the theft has been reported
existing registration certificate part I (formerly: vehicle registration document)

if applicable:

if represented by another person: written power of attorney and valid identity card or passport of the authorized person

for minors: Declaration of consent and identity documents of the legal guardian

If the registration certificate part II is merely illegible, you can also have it replaced at your responsible registration authority without a deadline. Please also bring your registration certificate part I with you.

Procedure

You apply for a replacement part II registration certificate from your registration authority.

The registration authority reports the loss or theft of the registration certificate part II to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Upon request, the KBA publishes the lost registration certificate part II in the Verkehrsblatt (traffic gazette) with a deadline of 14 days for submission to the responsible registration authority. The registration authority may only issue a replacement document after the deadline has expired. You can then collect the new registration documents.

If you find a lost registration certificate part II, you must report this immediately to the responsible registration authority.
