Apply for a license plate

Description

Would you like a specific combination of letters or numbers for your license plate, for example

an abbreviation of your name
the abbreviation of your company,
a date of birth or wedding date or
would you like an "old license plate" for your vehicle that is available again in your district together with a specific identification number?

You can apply for a license plate for a fee or reserve one in advance.

If you would like to use the license plate number of your deregistered vehicle again later in the same administrative district, you can have the identification number reserved for a certain period of time for a fee and apply again in connection with the re-registration or the registration of another vehicle. A reservation of the desired registration number expires if you move a deregistered vehicle. Please contact the registration authority beforehand.

Attention:

Subsequent changes to a license plate combination allocated to a vehicle are only possible for an additional fee.
A license plate reserved in another registration district cannot be taken to the new registration district when moving.

Note:The registration authorities will try to comply with your wishes. However, you have no legal entitlement to a license plate of your choice.

Required documents

If you have reserved a license plate in advance, you will need the reservation confirmation for the registration procedure.

Fees (costs)

In addition to the registration fees, you will incur administrative fees for

License plates: EUR 10.20
Reservation: EUR 2.60

Note:If you opt for an "old license plate" with several distinguishing marks in an administrative district, you only have to pay a license plate fee if you also want a specific alpha-numeric combination.

Please note: An additional electronic query is required to determine whether the desired identification number can be assigned by the registration authority. The fees therefore also apply if your desired license plate number is not available.

The additional fee is also charged if you reserve or re-allocate a license plate that has already been allocated at an earlier date.

This amount is made up of EUR 2.60 for advance reservation and EUR 10.20 for license plate allocation. The fee is then charged when the vehicle is registered.

The fee can be paid in cash or by EC card at the registration office.

Procedure

At most registration authorities, you can reserve or apply for vanity plates in person, in writing or by telephone. Many registration authorities also offer an online service on the Internet.

Note: You can find out how long your license plate will be reserved for you directly from the relevant authority.

You can choose a license plate for your vehicle in Halle either in person at the vehicle registration office or on your home PC via the Internet and reserve it online before registration.

You have the option of making an appointment online for a personal visit.

If you would like to extend the reservation of your desired license plate beyond 30 days, please call the Halle registration authority or apply for the extension in person.

Further information

If you want to re-use your license plate later in the same administrative district when you deregister your vehicle, you can have it reserved for a certain period of time at most registration authorities for a fee and also apply for it again in connection with the registration of another vehicle.

Only official license plates (normal black plates) can be reserved.
A saved reservation will be deleted if your vehicle is not registered within 30 days or if an extension is requested by telephone or in person at the vehicle registration office within this period.
No legal claim to the allocation of a specific license plate can be asserted!
