Applying for a vehicle to be taken out of service

Description

If you want to deregister your vehicle, you must apply for it to be taken out of service. This also applies to trailers.

Once you have deregistered the vehicle, you may no longer move it on the road or park it in public areas.

You can submit the application in person or through your representative to the relevant registration authority.

If you do not have your vehicle scrapped, you can usually have the vehicle's license plate reserved for later re-registration for up to one year.

The vehicle must be taken out of service (former immobilization) if it is to be taken out of circulation.

In the event of theft

If the vehicle is stolen, you must apply to have it taken out of service (former immobilization).

For interchangeable license plates

If only one of the two vehicles registered with an interchangeable license plate is to be taken out of service, the corresponding registration certificate part I and the vehicle-related part of this license plate with the city seal sticker affixed must be submitted for its removal.
The common and vehicle-related part of the license plate on the remaining vehicle can be retained.
If the second vehicle is also taken out of service or if both vehicles are taken out of service at the same time, the second registration certificate Part I, the joint license plate part and the vehicle-related license plate parts with the city seal stickers must be presented for their removal.

Prerequisites

You can take your vehicle out of service

if you intend to sell it,
if you are temporarily not using it or
if you have it scrapped.

Required documents

if available: completed application form
Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration certificate), if applicable with trailer list
License plates, for validation by the registration authority

If the vehicle is scrapped, the following must also be submitted

Proof of utilization or
Declaration of whereabouts if the vehicle is being disposed of abroad
Registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document), if this has been issued

Valid identification document of the person making the application

If the vehicle istaken out of service due to theft , the following is required

Registration certificate part I (formerly vehicle registration document)
Notification to the police

When decommissioning vehicles with variable license plates , the following is required

Registration certificate part I (formerly vehicle registration document)
registration number
Valid identification document of the person making the application

If an authorized representative is present:

Registration certificate part I (formerly vehicle registration document)
license plate number
Written power of attorney from the person granting the power of attorney and valid identification document of the authorized representative

7.80 euros when visiting the registration authority
EUR 5.70 for online deregistration (Internet-based deregistration of vehicles, currently not possible)
An additional EUR 5.10 if a certificate of destruction is presented at the same time (scrapping certificate, only applies to vehicles in categories M1 and N1, up to 3.5t)

The fee can be paid in cash or by EC card at the registration office.

In the event of deregistration due to vehicle theft:

7.80 euros on presentation at the registration authority

The fee can be paid in cash or by EC card at the registration authority.

In the case of decommissioning of vehicles with interchangeable license plates:

7.70 euros at the registration office
EUR 5.70 for online deregistration (Internet-based deregistration of vehicles; see additional information below)

The application can be made in person by the vehicle owner or by a third party.

You have the option of making an appointment for your request online.

Further requirements for deregistration using the online procedure:

To deregister a vehicle online, you will need:

the new ID card or electronic residence permit (each with the online ID function activated)
an ID card reader and the AusweisApp 2.0
the license plate number of the vehicle
the security code of the registration certificate I (formerly vehicle registration document)
the security codes of the stamp stickers (seals on the license plates)

Notes on the online procedure:

The security codes can only be found under the seals that were issued from 02.01.2015.
The following payment methods are available for online fee payment:
- Credit card (Mastercard, Visa)
- Giropay
- direct debit
If your vehicle already has a certificate of destruction ("scrapped" or is due to be "scrapped"), internet-based deregistration is notpossible.
Internet-based deregistration isnot possible for motorcycles and trailers with an interchangeable license plate.
