Applying for a new ID card due to theft

Description

You must report the theft of your ID card.

You can report the theft to any identity card authority. As a rule, you should contact your local citizens' office. If you report the theft to the police, you must go to the ID card office to apply for a new ID card.

You must also apply for a new ID card if you are over 16 years old and do not have a valid passport document, i.e. a passport or temporary passport. You can submit the application to the citizens' office at your main place of residence.

If you do not apply for your new ID card at your main place of residence, but at another citizens' office, you will need an important reason. You will also have to pay a surcharge. If you contact your chosen Citizens' Registration Office in advance, you can find out whether and to what extent the Citizens' Registration Office will accept your reason.

Prerequisites

Your ID card has been stolen.
You must apply for a new identity card if you
- have German citizenship,
- have reached the age of 16,
- are registered in Germany
- have no other valid passport document, i.e. no passport or temporary passport.
For applications outside your main place of residence:
- You must provide an important reason why you are not applying for the ID card at the ID card authority that is responsible at your main place of residence.

if available: police report of loss
for children under the age of 16:
- if applicable, a declaration of consent from the parent with custody who is not present
- if there is only one parent or legal guardian, additional proof of custody

You make an appointment at your local citizens' office.
You bring the necessary documents with you.
You pay the fee.
When you apply, your Citizens' Registration Office will inform you when you can collect your ID card.
You will receive a new transport PIN by letter to make your online ID function ready for use with the newly requested ID card. You decide when you want to use this option.
