Apply for birth certificate for births on seagoing vessels

Description

If a child is born during a voyage on a seagoing ship that is entitled to fly the federal flag, there is an obligation to report the birth to the registry office I in Berlin. The parent with custody will file the birth report with the skipper. If the parents are unable to attend, any other person who was present at the birth is also obliged to report it.

Prerequisites

If a child is born on a German seagoing vessel, the notification is mandatory. This applies regardless of the nationality of the parents or the child.

Required documents

for married parents
- Birth certificates of the parents, if necessary with translation, legalization or apostille
- Marriage certificate or a certified printout from the marriage register, if necessary with translation, legalisation or apostille
for unmarried parents
- Birth certificate of the mother, if necessary with translation, legalization or apostille
- if paternity has already been recognised:
  - Declaration of recognition of paternity and mother's declaration of consent
  - Father's birth certificate
  - where applicable, the declaration of custody
  - all with translation, legalization or apostille if necessary
Identity card, passport or a recognized passport replacement document of the parents

A marriage certificate and proof of dissolution must also be presented if the marriage has since been divorced or the husband has died within 300 days before the birth of the child.

Procedure

The parent with custody or, in the event of prevention, another person who was present at the birth will file the birth report with the skipper.
The required documents should be attached or submitted at the next opportunity to the registry office I in Berlin. Ordered documents can be sent.
