Persons insured under the statutory health insurance scheme are entitled to be supplied with pharmacy-only drugs and dressings. The costs are covered by the health insurance funds.

Exception: For insured persons over 18 years of age, the costs for so-called minor drugs are not covered. These include:

• Medicines for the treatment of colds and flu-like infections.
• Oral and pharyngeal remedies (except for fungal infections),
• Laxatives
• Medicines for travel sickness.

The cost of remedies that you can buy without a prescription is generally not covered. Exception:

• Medicines that are standard of care for serious illnesses and are prescribed by a doctor.

The choice of prescribed drugs may be limited by discount contracts between the health insurance companies and manufacturers. However, these drugs are then also free of co-payment.

Fixed amounts may also apply to drugs and dressings. You must bear any additional costs yourself.
